Keeping in mind the class discussion on social norms and cultural roles and expectations, how much freedom do we really have in our choices/behavior. Please be sure to defend your position.

I think that we are free to are selves until a certian point. Everything we do hasa price we have to pay if its not right. The choices me make always have a consequece for are choice even though we don't think so. In are own mind I think that we are not free what we do someone else may think it is wrong and that goes for behavior also.

i think that we have freedom to a certain extent. like we have freedom to think what we want and believe in certain things or not. also we have freedom to express ourselves in any kind of way we want except if it causes harm to others. so we have freedom more than other countries but the thing is some don't appreciate or take it for granted but i really do think we are pretty free.
Freedom, it’s a nice thought but we are not really free. Got to remember we live in very opinionated society that fills that everyone should think like them, when I mean people I really mean society. A perfect example of that is the tough on crime policies of the 70’s, 80’s and 90's. The direct result of this flawed thinking is the prison population jumping from 400,000 to 2.2 million that is a large number, concentering as of 2010 the U.S census population is at around 309,252,000. That’s 2.2 million that is going to be release some day that cannot even exercise smallest of freedoms like voting, obtaining proper employment even after serving the punishment the state or government place a upon.
With the states and U.S. Government privatizing prisons now giving Private Corporation the chance to come in and build their own prison, and generating high profits off the labor of prisoners, this is only opening the doors and demand for more prisoners. More prison equal more profits in their eyes of big corporations. All this is another form of slave labor.
As long as we keep passing laws that targets certain social classes in society we will never really be free. Senate Bill 1070 showed us how the higher social classes like to enforce their ideals and beliefs on the working and poor classes. With SB. 1070 and the wide spread propaganda agented the hard working Mexicans, the state was able to racially profile and segregate the Mexican. The result, more Mexicans in prison and more labor, and then back to Mexico they were sent.
The states and U.S government can justify any action because it’s just prisoners. This is the loophole between freedom and slavery.

I believe that we have total freedom in our behavior and choices. I do believe that there influences that can drastically affect what types of choices that we make. That they can have so much impact that we believe that we do not have any other choice. For example, how many people would jump in front of a bus? I would assume not too many. There are a lot of things coming into play to tell us that we shouldn’t or can’t do that. But how many would jump in front of it to push their child out of the way? Take the child away and you chose to jump in front of a bus. So when things influence us to guide or thoughts and choices, especially a difference across cultures, all we need do is become aware of the influences around us and then choose for ourselves what it is that we really are going to do and think.
"How free are we?" I feel that we are not free at all. The government makes it seem like we but really we are controlled human beings. We are given select places to shop and what we can watch on tv etc. Then at any given time the government can change it up or give late breaking news or just stop streaming tv all together. I think we are only free to make choices honestly. There is always a cause and effect to everything we do in life no matter what.

Freedom is not always a given for many people. There are those enslaved by social or political norms and you know little or perhaps nothing about freedom. But, what is freedom- free will? Is it a state of you as individual being able to do or not to do: to choose or not to choose? I believe there are two types of freedom. There is that “outside” freedom under which one lives and is governed by culture, religion, science, technology, economy, politics, etc. Out freedom is limited in various or under all circumstances due to our achieving a particular goal which society sets for us. For example, we’re bombarded with celebrities and how it is “cool” to be rich and famous, that so many people seek their entire lives reaching that particular standard. Other examples perhaps also most common is the marketing with alcohol and cigarettes. Men and women begin by bits until they are completely hooked and become heavy drinkers/smokers. This is a freedom that we have to choose between what we want for ourselves and because of our free will; we tend to be enslaved with all these things that supposedly offer us freedom and happiness. We fall into a hole trying to be set free and perhaps what is offer to us sometimes, or many times sunk us deeper and away from our freedom.
A second type of freedom is our “inside” or interior freedom. This can be a more personal freedom which cannot be easily taken away. It is that which makes me complete as a human being. It is when one can think and feel freely. This freedom, is the most difficult to achieve because it is about us. It is difficult to overcome ourselves and to get to know ourselves and accept our highs and lows. That is why we are easily targeted and rather concentrate on our outside surroundings than ourselves.
Although, freedom is altered, once experiences freedom within ourselves, one can begin and be set free externally. Furthermore, FREEDOM must exist otherwise, who are we to even consider such topic?

As children we are subjected to certain ways of life. We are taught to act certain ways in public and at home. These ways of life vary around the world and even around the city, block by block. As in other papers, freedom is extremely hard to define but by the best definition I think that we are free to do whatever we want, as long as we are willing to accept the consequences. As children we can do whatever we wanted but it was our parents who punished us when we were bad, therefore we learned not to do some certain things even though they were in our ability to commit. And these things we are allowed to do and not to do are all in our ability. So as far as freedom goes, depending on how you see it, we are completely free. Only technically.
Many people are tied by certain norms and expectations and others aren’t so are perception of freedom varies person to person, and is altered. It’s a tricky thing to apply to all people and therefore I don’t believe it can because many people are different and let themselves apply their lives to these norms.
Our behavior is quite the opposite. Behavior is built almost solely on the place, manner, and way we were raised. We have almost no choice in our actual behavior. The social norms in which we were raised define us, whether we decide to follow them or rebel against them. We also are defined by the social expectations.
On this we can look back and look in comparison. We can look at the social norms and expectations 200 years ago with slavery and those racially biased laws (even 40 years ago, racially biased laws still existed). Our social norms and our expectations change as do our freedom.

I don't believe we're truly free.
There are those who choose to believe in free will, and those who do not. There are those who know we could never be free, and those who do not.
But then, there are those who don't mind, and live on. And those who take it as a setback.
Which would you rather take?
